Water and Wastewater Operator/Street Department Worker

Position Reports To: Public Works Director
Department: Public Works Department
Supervisory Responsibilities: Yes

Job Summary

Under general supervision, may operate various City equipment, operate and maintain water and wastewater system, maintain streets and various duties as required.

Specific Job Duties and Responsibilities

A. Water Department

  1. Make water service connections
  2. Repair water leaks
  3. Read water meters and record data
  4. Shut off and turn on water meters
  5. Operate water system and record data
  6. Perform general maintenance on water system
  7. Install water mains
  8. Operate backhoe and trackhoe
  9. Assist other department employees In various job duties
  10. Perform various other duties as assigned

B. Wastewater Department

  1. Install sewer service connections (tap sewer mains)
  2. Install and repair sewer mains
  3. Maintain sewer mains and manholes
  4. Maintain sewer pump stations
  5. Operate sewer plant, pump stations and record data
  6. Remove and replace sewer pumps
  7. Perform general maintenance on sewer system
  8. Operate backhoe and trackhoe
  9. Assist other department employees in various job duties
  10. Perform other duties as assigned

C. Street Department

  1. Repair and replace street signs
  2. Install, repair and replace culverts
  3. Lay asphalt and perform street maintenance
  4. Operate lawn mower and grass trimmer
  5. Operate dump truck
  6. Operate tractor and bushhog mowing right of ways
  7. Assist other department employees in various job duties
  8. Perform other duties as assigned

D. Equipment

  1. Perform routine maintenance on all equipment and vehicles
  2. Operate backhoe, dump truck, trackhoe, tractor, street'sweeper, air compressor, asphalt roller, asphalt lay down machine, sewer cleaning machine, mole, lawn mower, weed trimmer, various pumps and other equipment as required and In a safe manner.

E. Miscellaneous

  1. Employee will be required to check the water and wastewater systems on alternating weekends and be on emergency call twenty four hours a day for repairs.

Special Knowledge, Skills, Abilities or Education

Ability to safely and skillfully operate City equipment In the performance of duties.
Ability to follow oral and written Instructions.
Awareness of all safety standards when performing duties.
Ability to perform manual physical labor when necessary.

Working Conditions

Working conditions include operation and maintenance of water and wastewater systems and street department duties in all types of weather conditions including extreme heat and cold, dry, wet, muddy and dirty areas such as sewer pump stations and manholes. Working conditions may also include working after dark to assist In an emergency, on weekends and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from High School or GED.
Must have a valid Arkansas Drivers License.
Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
Must pass a pre-employment physical.
Must pass a pre-employment drug test.
Employee must have or be wllllng to obtain a Grade 1 Water Distribution License or higher and a Class 1 Wastewater Operator License.or higher.
